Happy Birthday Again!

Cool! Shelby got a birthday shout out on the home and children's design website Oh Dee Doh today! Click here to see the link.

13 Months Old

Some things about Shelby at 13 months old:
  • She is really taking off with mimicking and learning word association. She will now point to her head when we simply say "head" and we are working on other words like "nose" and "mouth" although whenever we point to our nose she thinks we are blowing kisses and will blow kisses back. It's so cute. Sometimes if we do one thing, she will run through all of her "tricks" at once as if she's trying to impress us!
  • The cutest copycat thing she is doing right now is something we call "scary face." We say "scary face" and squint our eyes and open our mouth and she copies us. Here is her not-so-scary face:

  • She makes "ba" noises and sounds when she points to balloons, bubbles and balls. Who needs toys when a couple of dollars worth of bubbles and an old mylar birthday balloon provide hours of entertainment?!
  • She is SO close to walking. She will now cruise easily around furniture and pushes her push toy like a pro. She must've done 30 laps around the living room this weekend. It really surprised me how quickly she went from not-at-all interested in walking to almost walking.
  • Tonight she even stood up by herself a few times - with no support at all!
  • She loves throwing her sippy cup on the floor... when do babies outgrow this annoying habit?! I try to look at her sternly and say "no!" but she just thinks I'm being funny! I even bought a silly gimmicky strap that attaches the cup to her highchair but she just plays with it.
  • We gave her a juice box at the Easter egg hunt this weekend and she pretty quickly figured out how to use a straw. She LOVES straws, cups, utensils, magazines, keys, iPhones ... basically anything that we use frequently, she wants to get her hands on.
  • Before spring break, we transitioned her out of the Graco infant car seat and into the Britax convertible car seat. It's great to not have to lug that thing around anymore!
  • She had recently been in a good place with sleep (good for her = waking up only once a night, nursing for five minutes and easily going back to bed) but her sleep has been a bit of a roller coaster since she had strep. It's slowly improving again though. I still cannot bring myself to do any type of sleep training because she goes down easily, sleeps through a majority of the night, and I can't bear the thought of having to do it again after every illness.
  • She now takes one nap a day around noon and sleeps for around an hour and a half to two hours.
  • She eats breakfast at around 8:30, lunch around 11, has a snack around 3 and nurses at bedtime and before her nap on weekends. I have completely stopped pumping at work and only nurse her when we are at home together. I don't even think she "needs" to nurse before sleep but I am not really sure when and how to stop! It will be a weaning process for me just as much as her.
  • She drinks whole milk now but prefers water.
  • Her favorite foods are still avocado, banana, chicken, cheese ravioli, cheese, yogurt, Goldfish, Cheerios, peaches and pears.
  • I haven't weighed her recently but she must weigh more than 20 pounds now. She wears mostly 12 and 18 month clothing. Her feet are still pretty small - a size three shoe is too big.
  • Her current favorite toys are balls, books, her wooden elephant push toy, and any non-toy item that's in our hands at the moment... of course!
  • She is at a really cute, fun stage right now. It's easy to make her laugh and she's really cuddly and cute.

Swinging Into Spring!

Happy Easter!

We had a great Easter weekend. Shelby is currently on hour two of her nap (a rarity) after a busy morning of church and lunch. We also went to the neighborhood Easter egg hunt on Saturday, where she toddled around and collected a few eggs with our assistance. We visited the mall Easter bunny on Friday, which she wanted NO part of! She was terrified of him! I guess he's scarier than mall Santa, who she had no problem with. The weather this weekend was absolutely gorgeous and it was so much fun to finally break out her cute spring dresses! More pictures are in the month fourteen gallery.

Fun in the Car Cart

This certainly makes grocery trips more fun!

Pizza and a Bath

We went to Enzo's for pizza tonight and Shelby was captivated by the patio fountain. She liked it so much she thought it would be fun to try to stick her head in the water and wash her hair! She is fearless. I have a feeling someone is going to be pure mischief at the pool this summer!

What's New

After almost two weeks in flux, we are really looking forward to getting back into our routine tomorrow! I think between vacation and being out sick, Shelby has been sort of confused.

However, that has not stopped her from doing some cute new things. She has gotten really good at mimicking us and will wave bye, blow kisses and touch her head when we prompt her. She will also repeat more of the noises we make. Despite us pointing repeating her two favorite things over and over again - cat and car - she still will not repeat a hard "C" sound and calls the cat "dur dur" most of the time. We think she might be saying "brother" which is of course how we refer to him! :)

She's been a little bit fussy at mealtime lately but I think that is related to not being in her normal routine and eating around the other babies in her class. But she has expressed interest in her spoon and will hold it, put it in her food and then bring it to her mouth, although rarely does any food stay on the spoon. She has the motion down, though! She also puts her shoes near her feet and her brush near her head - it's cool to see her recognize and remember what certain things are for!

We are looking forward to Easter activities this weekend!

On the Mend

After enjoying a nice spring break, we returned to our normal work and preschool routines for exactly half a day before Shelby came down with a fever and was diagnosed with strep two days later! Her fever spiked as high as 104 and she was absolutely miserable. I have never seen her eat so little. Thankfully she is feeling much better and will go back to school tomorrow. Hopefully with spring here, the days of constant sickness are dwindling! As much as I love it when she is all cuddly and just wants mama to hold her, I'd much rather see her well.

She was much better today and is like a totally different baby when she is feeling well. She felt so much better, in fact, she even climbed two stairs! (with us right next to her the whole time) Time to put up the baby gates! I think the picture above is so cute - she looks so much older to me - like a true toddler.

Flower Girl: A Year Later

Remember this picture? Here's Shelby a year later, under the same tree. My, how she's changed!

Month 13 Photos

I have been falling behind in updating my photo galleries. Month 13 photos are up, including birthday photos and more spring break pictures. Click on the link on the right side of the page or click here.

Spring Break

We had a great spring break vacation at the beach. The weather was a little windy and brisk at first, but warmed up nicely by the end of the trip. Shelby had fun playing in the sand (and eating a little!) and we thought she might take her first steps while there. She is getting great at toddling around while holding our hands, but she is not quite ready to let go yet! She had a bit of a runny nose but it did not seem to bother her much at all. We went on great walks every morning, played at the playground, ate good food and just relaxed. She will definitely be walking and on the move by our next trip!
